With all the different microphones available, someone looking for a good setup for their drum kit could easily get lost in trying to understand what all the information means, and what microphones would be best to use for different parts of their drum setup. My main focus here is to explain the basics of microphones so a drummer can better understand and select their own setup.

A lot of people have seen the cool or strange looking electronic drum kits at the local music shops. Some have tried them out, usually coming away with the “They don’t play or sound like real drums do”. Some kits do, some don’t. The more “Entry Level” e-drum setups sound distinctly artificial, while the other high end e-drum kits could successfully masquerade as an acoustic kit on a recording.
